Student Verdict is built so that ratings can be honest without anyone being identifiable. This page explains what we collect, why, and what is shown publicly.
What we collect
- Your email address — but we do not store it. When you enter it, we keep only a one-way cryptographic hash (which cannot be turned back into the address) and the domain, such as nyu.edu. The domain decides how much your rating counts. The hash is how we enforce one rating per person.
- Your ratings, reviews, questions and comments, and anything you choose to add to them: whether you are a current student, graduate or transfer student, your class year or years attended, and your department.
- A coarse network identifier. We do not store your IP address. We keep only a shortened form (the first three parts of an IPv4 address, for example), which identifies a network such as a building or household, not a device. It is used to detect coordinated rating.
- A random device identifier stored in your browser, used only to stop one device rating the same university from several accounts.
- Aggregate visit counts: how many times each page was viewed and which website or campaign sent visitors. These counts are not linked to you or to any profile.
Cookies and similar storage
We use a small number of essential cookies and browser storage: one to keep you signed in, one to remember that you entered an access code (while the site is in preview), the device identifier above, and an anonymous sign-in provided by Google Firebase that keeps your account consistent across visits. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
What is public
Reviews and comments are published without your name or email address. They show a badge (for example, “Verified” for a school email address), the details you chose to add (such as “Graduated · Class of 2024” or your department), and the date. In discussions, people appear as “Student A”, “Visitor B” and so on, and those labels apply only within a single thread. There are no public profiles.
Please remember that the text of a review can identify you if it describes something only you would know.
How we use information
To run the site, weight and publish ratings, prevent abuse and duplicate ratings, moderate content, and understand which pages are used. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Service providers
The site is hosted on Google Firebase and Google Cloud, which store the data above on our behalf. Campus photographs are loaded from Wikimedia Commons, so your browser contacts Wikimedia’s servers when it displays them.
Keeping and deleting your information
You can edit or delete your ratings and reviews at any time from Your ratings. Deleted reviews are removed from the site. We keep the email hash after deletion so the same address cannot be used to rate the same university again; the hash cannot be used to recover your address. For any other request, including access to or deletion of information associated with your account, email support@studentverdict.com.
Children
Student Verdict is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Security
Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored with access limited to the site’s own servers. The database cannot be written to directly from the browser.
Changes and contact
